ALS Shoot for A Cure Details

A Tradition Since 2003

The ALS Shoot for a Cure, proudly supported by Vancouver Firefighter Charities, began in 2003 to honour Vancouver Firefighters Ranny MacDonald and Jim MacLeod, both of whom tragically passed away from ALS. This annual event unites firefighters, families, and the community in their memory.

Since its inception, the event has raised over $375,000 for the ALS Society of BC. With 100% of proceeds donated, Vancouver Firefighters remain dedicated to supporting ALS patients, their families, and the search for a cure.

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that attacks the motor neurons controlling voluntary muscles. As these neurons die, the brain loses the ability to send signals to the body, leading to muscle weakness, loss of mobility, and eventually paralysis.

ALS can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. While senses and cognitive ability often remain intact, the cost of care can be overwhelming, with equipment and support averaging well over $100,000 per patient. With no known cure, fundraising and community support are vital to helping patients live with dignity and hope.

History Of ALS Shoot For A Cure

The ALS Shoot For A Cure was founded by Vancouver Firefighters to honour two of their own who battled ALS: Firefighter Ranny MacDonald, diagnosed in 2000, and Battalion Chief Jim MacLeod, diagnosed in 2008. Both men fought with courage but sadly passed away, inspiring their colleagues to turn grief into action through an annual fundraiser in their memory.

Since the first shoot in 2003, the event has grown into a cornerstone initiative of Vancouver Firefighter Charities. Hosted with the support of the Vancouver Gun Club, it brings together firefighters, families, and community members each spring. To date, the ALS Shoot has raised over $375,000 for the ALS Society of BC; with the hope that one day a cure will be found.
